BLOG 6 months ago by Esther I'm sorry, I didn't see all of these posts until now. You are all right. The truth is that I never should have posted this blog because between the time that I wrote it (3 hours after the race) and when it was posted the next day, I had already apologized to Lauren for being rude to her after the awards and she had apologized to me for breaking the USATF rules I pointed out to her and expressed her respect for my accomplishments in my sport. She said it was an honest mistake and I should have left it at that. None of what I wrote was fabricated, but I did overreact like Thomas pointed out. I had removed my post from facebook and hadn't gotten around to asking for this one to be removed. I'm sorry it has been up for so long. |

BLOG 6 months ago by Anonymous Why did you feel the need to type all of this out if you are truly the bigger person? A good sport would just let it be instead of complaining about it on the internet in the guise of a Thankfulness post. This definitely reflects poorly on your character more than Lauren's. |

BLOG 6 months ago by Anonymous Observer Esther hopefully you are a gracious winner? You obviously are a very talented athlete. I saw the finish and I saw the finishing video. I also spoke to people at the finish line and your claims that Lauren is cut throat, blocked, fouled etc. are completely inaccurate. I think you are upset that you lost a very close race. I have been racing for over 20 years in road races and triathlons and have never meet a person that I was unable to pass, that is unless they were faster than me. I think you are being a "cry baby" and should learn to be a gracious looser. |

BLOG 6 months ago by Thomas Gerlach Martin, Yes I think I know why that was. It is because they both have the same time and E comes before G and after time it is sorted alpha by last name most likely. I had the same issue at Ironman Steelhead 70.3 this year. It says I finished 10th but if you look at the photos I have 3 meter gap on my competition even though we were given the exact same time. Also in triathlon, sometimes we have premes for say fastest swim, bike, and run. The number of times the sensors have messed up on a T1 and T2 and then we have to guesstimate whether I had the fastest bike have caused me enough heartache. I have always gone back to the RD and if there is a problem they should rectify. Afterall it isn't my fault the equipment didn't work or there was not a photo finish at 5K. Heck we just had a photo finish on the female side at a 9 hour event at Ironman Cozumel today. Who would have thought. Anyway, I agree there needs to be better validation at some of these events. BLOG 6 months ago by Thomas Gerlach So I'll mention a few things. First, you remind me a little bit of myself as I am known for being a very talkative person while competing in Triathlon. I am always smiling, and I am always sending good vibes to my competition, but that doesn't mean that I don't want to beat them, and trust me I do. With that being said sometimes the race dynamics that take place in an instant are played back in our minds a million times. It is easy to think back on something and dwell on it. Rarely does true unsportsmanlike behavior exist. Recently, I had the other local pro in my hometown call me out on twitter after Ironman Florida. After sitting down for dinner and talking about it he realized he was probably in the wrong and that tweet no longer exists. Sometimes it just comes down to perspective, and let's face it, we are all different and come from different walks of life. In this case, other people were looking on to him having a relatively disappointing season and losing and myself having a relatively ground-breaking season and chose to make judgments on that pro that I can certainly say reflected poorly upon him. In this case I highly doubt Lauren did anything unsportsmanlike. I wasn't there so I can't comment, but for the record, the first sentence uttered out of her mouth to me ever was, "you have to pick up your knees" while clicking off a 5:45 mile after a 1.2 mile swim, and 56 mile bike. She didn't know who I was, she didn't have to say anything, but she choose to be helpful. In this case, I would have liked to see you sit down with her sometime over coffee or a run instead of resorting to the interwebs were things live in infamy. Lastly I can say this. I do Ironman, it is between an 8-9 hour journey for me. It is supposed to be completely aerobic. However, that is not how races work at an elite level, and I'm anaerobic at critical points of the race. Sometimes you have to commit to the race. Racers, are not racing their fitness, they are racing each other. If someone wants to push the pace you have react. If the swim group starts swimming off course, sometimes you stay with them because there is safety in numbers. This does not result in the fastest time possible, but then again we are not out their racing for PRs, we are out there to win the gold, silver and bronze. No doubt it would be faster to race within your limits, but sometimes it pays to be aggressive and that is the beauty of races and race strategy. I have a famous triathlete friend whose motto is "if you are pacing you are not racing" and I can assure you Lauren was simply racing. Best of luck in 2013 :) Cheers, -TG Thomas Gerlach Professional Triathlete www.thomasgerlach.com |

BLOG 6 months ago by Martin Erb More to this story than is presented here. Esther was 1st listed as having been 1st, then was moved to 2nd. the results website shows 2 different times, depending on the listing. Esther and Lauren have connected in Facebook and are both looking forward to friendly rematch - with full awareness of the rules that apply to road racing - if not to triathlons. |

BLOG 6 months ago by Anonymous Coward I was there at the race and though I did not witness the first several miles, of course, I did see exactly what happened at the finish. You and Lauren were battling to the end, and I could see that it was going to be a close and exciting finish. She had a full body lead on you coming down to the end with 20yards or so to the finish line. As the two of you came near the finish mat, you were on the right of Lauren, a body step behind. At the time that you both were going across the finish, two men with the finish tape stepped right out in front of Lauren, causing her to jump out of his way, directing her to go more out of the way to her left. That actually cost her time. You were able to continue straight across the finish. If those men had not done what they did, Lauren would have clearly outstepped you at the finish. The confusion came with not knowing who had won because she got forced left which cost her time. You both are tremendous runners, and I congratulate you on a terrific time! I was also a part of her "family and fans" near her when you came up to speak with her after awards. I believe that the "poor sportsmanship" comment came because though you say you offered her a congratulatory compliment, it was quickly followed by a negative comment, a jab, if you will. It made you look like a sore loser which reflected poorly on you. It's kind of like saying to someone who is a bit overweight, "I love your new shirt! Did you choose the vertical stripes because those are supposed to be more slimming?" It was a jab, a sting/put down, inside the compliment...Not true sportsmanship, in my opinion, especially after seeking her out and stating it with a number of people around. Not knowing Lauren too well and never having met you, these were strictly my objective observations. I wish you well in all your future racing endeavors. |

I Need to Ramble a Bit...I Feel Inspired! BLOG 1 year ago by Lee Ryan I remember well meeting Andy (and the dogs) with my daughter as we walked on Blackberry Road just after he and Zika moved into the white house above us. He was unbelievably vibrant, outgoing and positive and instantly our friend. His passing was incredibly sad and followed 9/11 and the passing of our daughterâs 3rd grade teacher, Gwen Tyrie. What a dark, sad winter that was. Iâm sure heâs so proud of Zika and how well ZAP has turned out. |

These beach caps are supposed to keep away the summertime blues. They are called Patapgonia. The huge bill of these beach caps should your eyes from the sun and a dark underside should keep the glare from your eyes as well. These caps should survive being crush so you can find it later after you spill on your surfboard. These particular beach caps are from nylon and have a water-repellant finish. These beach caps are different from other caps. They are The North Face: Class V hat. They are different because they are 100% nylon Class V fabric treated with a water repellent finish that should help them stand up to going under water. It is engineered to float so it will come up eventually. The lining is especially made to keep sweat away from your face. These beach caps are called the Men's Fischer Hat. They are woven beanies. The Chicago House of Blues: A race recap minus the race. BLOG 2 years ago by Tim B Joe, your blog was curiously uplifting to me. My second time at the Dublin City Marathon, I thought I had at least perfected my post-race plans w/ a hotel next to the finish line. I was absolutely toast after I crossed the line only to enter a similar hell--I cirnavigated the finish area and decided a direct route over a few barriers was my best hope, only to be stopped by a vigilant policeman who I couldn't convince he was supposed to keep people out of the finish area, not prevent their escape. |

The Chicago House of Blues: A race recap minus the race. BLOG 2 years ago by Dana Felice Joe, thanks for the blog. I dnf'd my 2nd marathon at mile 8 (I came down with the flu the next day) and was spared the indignity of the sag (what does that mean? sorry assed geek?) wagon by thumbing a ride back to the start/finish. I also remember Chicago as second only to New York in terms of forced post race death march. New York has a one way exit that would take 5 minutes on a normal day but an hour doing the post 26.2 shuffle. Chicago has eight foot barriers that only a monkey would climb but the rent a cops would stop them. Best wishes on successful training for Houston. |
