Pennel, the 2012 NCAA Division II 10,000m Champion while at Western State University (CO), had a storied career in Gunnison finishing as the NCAA Runner-Up 5 times before winning the 2012 10,000m title. Pennel did not debut at the 10,000m distance until this season (2012) and did so with a time of 28:23.54, the 7th fastest time in Division II History. Peacock was the 2010 Big Ten Conference XC Champion and a multi-time All American while running for the Badgers and coach Mick Byrne. This past weekend saw ZAP athletes in action across the country. At the Portland Track Festival (Lewis & Clark College) Allison Grace-Morgan ran the 5,000m in 15:52.9 for her final tune up race before USATF Nationals in the 10,000m. The race comes on the heels of Morgan's mile pr the previous weekend at the Music City Distance Carnival. The same day in Indianapolis, rookie ZAP resident athlete Jesse "bear hunter" Cherry contested his first USATF National Road Championship (men's 8k). Cherry finished 14th in a time of 24:11. ZAP Resident Athlete Alissa McKaig was named today to the 2012 World Championship Team in the marathon. McKaig was named to the 5 woman squad based on her debut marathon 5th place performance (2:37.29) at the 2010 ING NYC Marathon which served as the USATF Championship. Joining her on the team are 2012 Olympic 10,000m runner Kara Goucher, 2008 Olympic Marathon Trials Champion Colleen De Reuck, 2:30 marathoner Tera Moody & Multiple time world championship team member Kathy Newberry. Sunday May 1st saw 3 breakthrough performances by the ZAP Team. Rookie resident athlete Esther Erb kicked things off on the East Coast at the Broad Street 10 Miler in Philadelphia. Cruising through 10k in a personal best, Erb closed well to finish 4th (1st American) in a time of 56:34, a 10 mile personal best. Erb will next toe the line at the Fifth Third River Bank Run 25k on 5/14 - the race is serving as the USATF 25 kilometer National Championship. As part of the ZAP Fitness winter training at Furman University (Greenville, SC), 4 members of the resident team took part in the Carolina First Reedy River Run on Saturday 3/5. In the men's race David Jankowski had a good tune up for next weekend's Gate River Run finishing 4th in 29:53 - teammate Chris clark was 7th grabbing the last podium spot. ZAP Resident Athlete Alissa McKaig earned her first senior World Cross Country Team selection on Saturday 2/5 by finishing 6th at the USATF XC Championship 8k (Mission Bay Park - San Diego, CA). McKaig, 24, placed herself in the top 6 immediately and remained there finishing the 8 kilometer course in 27:07. McKaig and the other 5 American qualifiers will take on the world at the IAAF World XC Championships in Punta Umbria, Spain on March 20th. Joe Driscoll made his comeback official on Saturday 1/29 with a 10th place 1:04.23 1/2 Marathon performance at the Houston 1/2 Marathon. The sub 1:05 time qualifies Driscoll for the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials (Driscoll's 2nd), to be run on the same course in January of 2012. ZAP resident athlete David Jankowski finished 14th at the B.U.P.A. XC Run Team Challenge on Saturday 1/8 in Scotland. Jankowski covered the ice and snow-laden 8.2 k course in 26:35 as the 5th member of the 9 member US Team.
